There is nothing in the world quite like being in the student section at a Penn State Nittany Lions home football game. The students are cheering for the team, singing fight songs, waving blue and white pom-poms, and chanting in unison whenever someone starts ringing a cowbell. The student section has another tradition, though: the S-Zone.
During every home football game, Lion Ambassadors lead a cheering section of 800 students in the student section, and in the section, students are given blue and white t-shirts to wear that create an enormous blue "S" on a white background that can be seen clearly from any vantage point in the stadium. Most importantly, it is highly visible on television during broadcasted games.
Starting as a card-block that students would hold up during games, the S-Zone began its current form during the 1998 football season. In 2008, we stepped back in history with a pink “S” against a black background, having the S-Zone reflect Penn State’s old school colors. Complete with black and pink shakers to match the shirt, the S-Zone now always reverts back to pink and black during the Homecoming football game.
The S-Zone will re-commence at the first home game of the 2016 season and be in place for every single home game. To ensure a spot in the S-Zone, arrive at Beaver Stadium a little early before the game and enter through the S-Zone ticket gate!
